January 2016 Meeting

Happy New Year, Everyone!

I came to the shocking realization that Knitapalooza is now only 2 months away!  I am not sure if I am excited or if I want to run.  Oh well, as Scarlet says, “I’ll worry about it tomorrow!”

On to the exciting January meeting, we are having Alissa Barton speak on how to “Tame Short Rows”.  Alissa is a good friend of our Guild and an excellent teacher.  I am very excited that she has agreed to come lead our meeting on Thursday.

We have also had a request from Warm Up America.  Billye Paul White and I are going out next week to put tags on items.  If anyone would like to go with us, please let me know.  Also they are asking for volunteers to hang the scarves on Sunday, February 14.  Let me know if you are interested.  Here’s the email Jenny sent me.

Last year, Warm Up America! teamed up with the Dallas Yarn Bombers to hang knitted and crocheted hats and scarves in four Dallas locations that were in need. This event took place in February and received quite a bit of media attention with all the local news stations and the Dallas Morning News.

We are planning on this same event happening on Sunday, February 14th this year and wanted to see if you group would like to get involved!  We still have to finalize all the details but here is what would be involved:

You would be teaming up with WUA! and other local organizations to put tags on hats and scarves and then hanging them on that Sunday, Feb 14th in specific Dallas locations. These scarves are free to the public and most of the hats and scarves were taken within hours. Again, this should also gain more publicity so we would like to promote WUA! and the other groups helping with the event.

You group may donate hats/scarves for the event, as will WUA!

Our meeting is Thursday, January 14 at 7:00 pm
                              The REC in Grapevine
                              Municipal Way (Off Main Street)
                              Grapevine, TX.

See Everyone on Thursday!

November 2015 Meeting

I am not sure I can believe it is November or not!  This year seems to be going very fast!

Our meeting is Thursday, November 12 at 7:00 pm.  We are going to be at the Grapevine REC.

I am very excited to announce our program Thursday evening is going to be presented by Barbara Moore.  Barbara is a member of the North Texas Hand Knitters Guild that meets in Arlington.  Her program is going to be demonstrating a template that will allow us to design five different shawls from miniature to full-sized adult shawls.  She will be talking about increases and how to use them effectively.  I am looking forward to this program, because as we get closer to Christmas it would be nice to know how to make a unique design for that special person.

December 10 will be our Christmas dinner. Remember if you would like to participate we will have a fun Christmas gift exchange.  The gift should not exceed $15 in value.  Participation is completely voluntary.  More details will follow.

Have a very Happy Thanksgiving everyone!  Hope to see you on Thursday evening!

June 2015 Meeting

Hello Everyone,

I am a little late on this email, but I hope everyone will understand.  We are going to have our meeting this month at:

Spring Creek Barbeque
315 West State Highway 114
Grapevine, TX

This will be a summer celebration, so bring your favorite project to knit, eat some barbeque and drink some tea.  I'm ready for their cobbler as well.

If you have time and would like, please feel free to stop over at the new Grapevine Rec Center on Main Street and check out their crafts classrooms.  We are seriously thinking about using that space for seven months of the year, September through April with December and May at a special restaurant location.  June, July and August will be discussed at a later date.

There are a lot of pros and cons to this space, but I am all for it.  The meetings would be from:

7:00 to 9:00 pm on the 2nd Thursday of the month.

There is a ton of space, great lighting and large screen tv for presentations.  It would step our guild up a notch and make us more serious about spreading the needlecraft of knitting and crocheting to a new level.

The down side of this is we have to pay for the space, and may have to increase dues (no more than $5 annually).  No decision will be made till we do an email vote of the membership.

REMEMBER:

Saturday, June 13 is Knit in Public at Southlake Town Center.

Hope to see everyone Thursday night and Saturday!

June Meeting and Location Search

Good Morning Everyone!

Last night was a very good evening!  I hope everyone enjoyed themselves.

We continue to search for that ideal place to hold our monthly meetings and we are researching all of our options.

I just spoke with Spring Creek Barbecue and confirmed we can have our June meeting there.  The banquet room holds 75 people and the gentleman I spoke with is pleased our group contacted Spring Creek.

The Spring Creek location is 315 W. State Hwy 114, Grapevine, TX.

Members, please continue looking into other locations.  All ideas you send to me and will be checked out!

I will keep everyone updated as we go forward with our search.

I am glad we had such a good turnout last night and so much fun!  I am looking forward to our next meeting on June 11 and getting summer started right!

Warm Up America

This year we are highlighting the work of Warm Up America as one of our community project charities.  If you would like to donate or participate it would be appreciated.
Warm Up America! is a charity centered around the idea of bringing warmth to the lives of others. The organization was founded in 1991 in a small Wisconsin town. Creative founder Evie Rosen came up with the idea of knitting or crocheting small sections and weaving them together to make blankets for those in need.
That same philosophy is what drives the organization today. Warm Up America! Distributes afghans, caps, and other items to tens of thousands of people. Knitters and crocheters around the country create their sections, gather in groups, and join their pieces together to create finished blankets.

Current Needs:  We have several organizations that need full-size child (54” x 42”) and adult (63” x 49”) afghans. Also, we have an ongoing donation need of baby blankets (40” x 40”)for Parkland hospital in Dallas, TX. Please send your donations to our home office address listed below.   The squares should be a finished size of 7” x 9”.  More information can be found on the WarmUpAmerica.org website.

Warm Up America! Foundation
3740 N. Josey Lane, Suite 102
Carrollton, TX 75007

We truly appreciate your kind donations and support!
We invite you to donate a square or afghan to Warm Up America or donate a child’s hat, mittens, or scarf for the Grapevine Police Community Outreach.
For every item that is donated your name will go into a special raffle for a fun prize.  Example:  1 Square, 1 Ticket; 2 Squares, 2 Tickets, etc.

December Meeting 2014

Hello Everyone!  I wish you a Happy Holiday Season and hope you can join us Thursday night for our Holiday Meeting.  We will meet at Uncle Julio's Mexican Restaurant in Grapevine.  Uncle Julio's is located on the corner of Hwy 114 and William D. Tate.  As always we are having an optional gift exchange.  Please bring a $10 minimum gift for the Dirty Santa game.  It is always nice if the gift is knitting related, but certainly not necessary.

It was decided that the Olive Garden was a less than desirable place to meet.  Uncle Julio's was contacted and they have room from us in December.  We have also contacted Bosses Pizza on Hwy 26.  We will have our January meeting at Bosses Pizza and vote on the best location.  Remember as we look at these locations to consider menu price point, lighting, location and sound level.  We have been fortunate that we are not paying for these room, but with that goes some disadvantages.  I am willing to take any and all suggestions for a better meeting places.

Remember Thursday night is at Uncle Julio's and if you would like to participate in the Dirty Santa game bring a gift.  Hope to see everyone on Thursday, December 11.

New Meeting Site -- November 13, 2014

Get Ready for Some Pizza or Let's Go Italian ! ! !

I received a call last Sunday night at about 6:10 pm from the manager of MiMi's Café.  He informed that the MiMi's in Grapevine is closing and we would not be able to meet there any longer.  Finding a place too meet is always challenging, but I think we have solved this problem.

I spoke to the manager of the Olive Garden and he is very happy to let us use their space for our meetings.  I have us booked through August, 2015.

Our first meeting will be next week, Thursday, November 13, 2014

The address is:
Olive Garden
301 West State Highway 114
Grapevine, TX

We will begin the meet and greet at 6:00 and dinner at 7:00.  For those of you not familiar with Grapevine, the Olive Garden is on the corner of 114 and Main Street, by Stacy's Furniture.

We will have two Grapevine Policeman join us to share the need in the Grapevine Community for knitted items.  Also we have now delivered $500 worth of games and therapeutic aids to the LaDora Nursing Home in Bedford.  They were extremely pleased with the gifts.

I look forward to seeing everyone next Thursday at the Olive Garden.

October Meeting -- October 9, 2014

I can hardly believe that we are going into October.  We have an exciting meeting planned for Thursday night, October 9.  A representative from Warm Up America is going to be our guest speaker.  A square for Warm Up America would be appreciated, but only if you have time and would like to help.  These squares knit very quickly on size 7 needles and worsted weight acrylic.  The end results should be a 7" x 9" square.  You can find patterns and all the information on warmupamerica.org.

I am very happy to report that we had 25 paid memberships at our September meeting.  I feel that we are off to a very good year.  We will be selling raffle tickets at the meeting, but please wait till I announce it is time to purchase your tickets.  If you haven't paid your dues you can that on Thursday as well.

Please remember that we have a Bluebonnet Group on Ravely.com.  It is always nice to share your projects and successes with the group.

See everyone on Thursday night at 6:00 p.m. for our meet and greet.  The meeting will begin promptly at 7:00 p.m.  Mimi's Café, Highway 114, Grapevine is the most happening place in Grapevine.

2014-15 September Kick-Off Meeting

Hello Everyone,

I can't believe we are beginning our 2014-15 Bluebonnet Year.  We have some very exciting things planned this year.  Kerry Buescher and Julia Ford have been working on some enhancements to our guild, as well as, Kerry putting together a great slate of programs.  It is going to be an exciting year ahead!

Remember that our $25 annual dues are to be paid at the September meeting.  Gloria Knight will be taking membership forms and Edee Buglione will be taking checks.  We had a great officer meeting and I am excited to be working with Kerry, Edee, and Toni Broadwater.  Gloria will be handling membership, Julia web enhancements and Toni Tharp, Community Services.

Unfortunately I will not be at the meeting on September 11, but I know everything will run smoothly.

It was decided at the Officer's meeting for the agenda for meetings going forward be as follows:

2nd Thursday of the Month
Mimi's Café, Hwy 114, Grapevine, TX

6:00 pm   Meet and socialize (This will give members who would like time to have dinner.)
7:00 pm   Meeting starts with welcome and pertinent announcements
7:15 pm   Program for the evening begins
8:15 pm   (approx.) Show and Share if you are interested.

We understand that everyone is excited to share what they've bought, that special pattern, or great project, but please wait till the Show and Share time to pull these items out.  Please be respectful and listen to all speakers.

Our meeting this month will be September 11 and we are going to have two really special raffle items.  Have a really good time and I will miss you all, but I know we are going to have a GREAT year!

August 9, 2014 -- New Year

I haven't updated this blog since May and it is time.  I can't believe that summer is coming to an end and we are getting ready for a new year.

Our last summer knit-along is this Thursday, August 14.  Our meet and greet will start at 6:00.  There will be no official meeting or program this Thursday. Our meeting will just be a time to meet everyone and share knitting projects, ideas and some laughs.  Our meeting will be held at MiMi's Café on Hwy 114 in front of Target.

There are some very exciting things planned for the upcoming year, and plans are under way for another GREAT Knitapalooza. So I hope to see everyone in September for our first official meeting of the 2014-15 year.  I think everyone will also like our new location at MiMi's Café.

Hope to see everyone on Thursday evening!

Happy Knitting,
Dixie

News from the May meeing

We had a great meeting on Thursday night !  It was amazing what people could wrap in a ball of yarn and the creative ways they were displayed and presented!  Such fun.  We had a good turn out but missed some of the regulars who could not attend.

I am very excited to announce tonight that we have a new meeting place.  MiMi's Café on Hwy 114 (in front of Target) in Grapevine has agreed to let us  use their room for the guild.  This room is quiet, spacious and well lit.  We are going to try it with our summer knit-ins and then schedule it in September.  I am confident it will meet our needs.

We are set with our officers:  Dixie Butler -- President; Kerry Buescher -- Vice President; Edee Buglione -- Treasurer; and Toni Broadwater -- Secretary.  We now have a membership committee that will assist with some administrative duties:  Membership -- Gloria Knight and Toni Tharp.  Julia Ford has agreed to researching PayPal or Square to give the guild the ability to accept credit cards when members are paying their dues and registering for Knitapalooza.

Everyone at the meeting was in agreement we should do more charitable knitting for the community.  If you are interested in starting before September check out the patterns under files on our Yahoo page.

Summer knitting will be on our regular night and time, at MiMi's Café with no program, no business, just knitting and sharing.  I hope you'll be able to join us!

Happy Knitting and I'll see you in June!
